Title: Wall Strength Question

Does the back block material have any effect on wall strength for defense or is it only the surface block built on top of it that matters?  I'm on the ice world and want to build an above ground house. With Wood being short in supply I'm thinking that if only the front block matters that I'll just use dirt for my rear blocks and back wall, but I wanted to find out if that would make it weaker first.

Only the surface block built on top of it matters for the strength, but for the comfort both front and back blocks matters.
